Other Symbols of Israel – Flag of Jerusalem and Lion
FLAG OF JERUSALEM — The flag of Jerusalem, created in 1949, is a shield
with the Lion of Judah between two horizontal blue stripes on a background of a
stone wall representing the Kotel (the Wailing Wall or the Western Wall),
flanked on each side by olive branches. The word Jerusalem in Hebrew is written
above the shield.
Lion of Judah |
LION — The Lion of Judah was the symbol of one of the twelve Israelite
tribes, Judah (the Kingly tribe), in the Book of Genesis of the Holy Bible. The
lion symbolizes fighting and protecting the Jewish holy places and as such it
is depicted on the Flag of Jerusalem.
Jesus
is called the “Lion of Judah” in Revelation 5:5 because He is the King of kings
and Lord of lords (Revelation 19:16).
Christians
believe that Jesus is the Messiah because at least 333 Hebrew Biblical
prophecies were fulfilled in Him alone during His first coming to earth as the
Lamb of God to atone for our sins and give us eternal life. He came the first
time to bring peace to the hearts of mankind, because the heart is the source
of all evil, strife and wickedness. When
the heart is transformed, then there will be peace outwardly—no more wars,
violence or terrorism.
When
He returns for the second time, He will come as the Lion of Judah, ruling and
reigning on the earth. His Throne will be in Jerusalem. He will take vengeance
against wickedness and bring peace to the world, because He is the “Prince of
Peace” (Isaiah 9:6). This verse also says that He is the Mighty God and the
Everlasting Father.
